    A hybrid evaluation approach and guidance for mHealth education applications

    © Springer International Publishing AG 2018. Mobile health education applications (MHEAs) are used to support different users. However, although these applications are increasing in number, there is no effective evaluation framework to measure their usability and thus save effort and time for their many user groups. This paper outlines a useful framework for evaluating MHEAs, together with particular evaluation metrics: an efficient hybrid of selected heuristic evaluation (HE) and usability evaluation (UE) factors to enable the determination of the usefulness and usability of MHEAs. We also propose a guidance tool to help stakeholders choose the most suitable MHEA. The outcome of this framework is envisioned as meeting the requirements of different users, in addition to enhancing the development of MHEAs using software engineering approaches by creating new and more effective evaluation techniques. Finally, we present qualitative and quantitative results for the framework when used with MHEAs

    Human-Centered Design Components in Spiral Model to Improve Mobility of Older Adults

    As humans grow older, their cognitive needs change more frequently due to distal and proximal life events. Designers and developers need to come up with better designs that integrate older users’ needs in a short period of time with more interaction with the users. Therefore, the positioning of human end users in the center of the design itself is not the key to the success of design artifacts while designing applications for older adults to use a smartphone as a promising tool for journey planner while using public transportation. This study analyzed the use of human-centered design (HCD) components, the spiral model, and the design for failure (DfF) approach to improve the interactions between older users and designers/developers in gathering usability needs in the concept stage and during the development of the app with short iterative cycles. To illustrate the importance of the applied approach, a case study with particular focus on older adults is presented.The results presented in this study are based on “Assistant” project funded by AAL JP, co-funded by the European Union.     User evaluation support through development environment for agile software teams

    User evaluation is generally performed early in the development process to reveal usability problems, design flaws, and errors and correct them before deploying. Due to the short iterations of agile development, implementing user evaluation as part of the development process is a challenge that is often neglected. In a previous work, we proposed an approach that would enable the integration of user evaluation throughout the development process, by managing and automating user evaluation activities from with the integrated development environment (IDE). In this work, we focus on a case study in which small-sized agile software teams, made up of students in an annual software engineering project course, applied our integrated user evaluation approach for developing their software projects. The feedbacks from these agile teams show the intuitiveness and effectiveness of our integration approach
